Plains third through sixth graders are currently participating in the Texas Bluebonnet Award Program. This is our fifth year to partner with Yoakum County Library to bring this unique opportunity to our students. Not only does this program offer a rich reading experience, it also allows our students to learn about civic responsibility and the voting process.

Each year the TBA selection committee chooses twenty books for consideration. In selecting titles, the committee considers student interests, relevant content, reputable reviews, and literary quality. Both fiction and nonfiction books are represented. Third through sixth graders across the state vote for their favorite book to win the award. Students must read or have read to them at least five books on the list in order to vote. We have chosen the following books from this year’s list:

Stef Soto, Taco Queen by Jennifer Torres

Chef Roy Choi by Jacqueline Briggs Martin

Keith Haring: The Boy Who Just Kept Drawing by Kay Haring

Sergeant Reckless by Patricia McCormick

Step Right Up by Donna Janell Bowman

Bravo! Poems About Amazing Hispanics by Margarita Engle
