COWBOYS DEFENSE BLANKS WINK TO OPEN SEASON!

August 30, 2010

Friday night, the Plains Cowboys travelled to Wink to kick off the highly anticipated 2010 football season.  The first quarter was scoreless as both teams settled into the routine of game action.  The highlight of the quarter was an 85-yard TD run by Josh Brock that was negated by a penalty.  The second quarter saw the Cowboys offense come to life as Brock put the Cowboys on the board with a 15-yard TD with 10:08 left in the half.  Edward Valdez kicked the PAT, and the Cowboys led 7-0.  With 4:19 left in the half, Merrit Crump scored from the 2 to put the Cowboys up by two scores.  The TD was set up by a nice completion from Brock to Court Crawford to put the ball at the two.  Valdez kick made the score 14-0, Cowboys.  Brock added his 2nd TD of the night with 2:25 left, scoring from 58 yards out.  The PAT failed, and the Cowboys held a 20-0 lead.  After getting inside the Wink 5-yard line after a nice run by Jaaron Bell, the Cowboys were unable to score before the half ended.

The start of the second half brought Cowboy fans to their feet as Omar Calderon took the kick-off at the 14 and didn't stop until he reached the goalline, an 86-yard TD. Valdez added the PAT and the Cowboys were up by the eventual final, 27-0.  Neither team was able to produce many yards or points for the remainder of the game.  Defensively, the Cowboys held the Wildcats to 172 yards of total offense.  Jaaron Bell led the D with 16 tackles, including 1 sack and 1 tackle for loss, along with an interception and a fumble recovery.  Cody Friesen and Hunter Welch also had standout games for the Cowboy defense.  Offensively, the Cowboys rolled up 445 yards, led by Josh Brock, who had 12 carries for 121 yards and two touchdowns, along with three pass completions for 75 yards.  Bell had 67 yards on 5 carries, and Lupe Lara had 43 yards on just 2 carries.
