Cowboys Fall to Whiteface in Baseball District Opener 10-3
March 10, 2010
The Plains Cowboys were undone by their inability to produce hits in key opportunities in their district-opening loss to Whiteface on Tuesday afternoon.
Christian Romero started the game on the mound for the Cowboys, and after giving up a single to open the game, proceeded to throw three innings of scoreless baseball. Romero struck out six, while allowing only the one hit. Theo Cordova led off the Cowboy half of the first with a single, and then stole second. Nathan McCravey sent Cordova home with an RBI double, and the Cowboys led 1-0.
A large turning point in the game occurred in the bottom of the third when the Cowboys loaded the bases with one out, but were unable to plate any runs. That score held up until the top of the fifth, when Whiteface exploded for six runs off of Theo Cordova, who came in to relieve Romero at the beginning of the fourth inning. Jaaron Bell came in to relieve Cordova with two out in the fifth, and finished the game for the Cowboys. Whiteface added four runs in the top of the sixth to make the score 10-1 headed into the bottom of the 7th. The Cowboys responded with two runs in the bottom of the 7th, one on an RBI triple by Romero, the other on a RBI single by Bell, mking the final 10-3.
Offensively, the Cowboys produced 9 hits, getting two each from Cordova and McCravey, and one hit apiece from Romero, Bell, Brandon Craft, Andrew Conway, and Lupe Lara. The loss moves the Cowboys season record to 0-3.
They will travel to New Deal on Saturday for a Varsity/JV doubleheader beginning at noon. We appreciate your continued support.
