One-Act Play

Students scurry across the stage, hurrying to get to their spots. Music blares through the speakers. Light slowly fades in and people come to life. Many things are happening at once and suddenly, they all move forward as one.
“And cut!” shouts Mr. Lindsey, the One-Act Play director. “Do it again, from the top. This time try to involve yourself even more.”
The play this year is “The Beggar’s Opera.” It is about a group of beggars who have come to do a play and basically make fun of operas, which were for the upper-class citizens. We are completely changing the style of the play to more of a pirate-ish feeling and including lots of sight gags.
I think it’s out of our element,” said sophomore Taylor Fitzgerald. “It makes it challenging because we’ve never acted like that before, it’s very different than our normal lifestyle.”
There are nineteen students, counting crew, in the OAP class. They are preparing for the zone competition on March 27th. The students have been working very hard for the past few months and have started rehearsals in the auditorium.
“The rehearsals are going well,” said Mr. Lindsey. “Good.”
In the play are fourteen cast members and five on crew. It is a mixture from seniors down to freshmen, who are all excited about the play.
“This year’s One-Act Play is a real challenge for all of us,” said Mr. Lindsey. “At this time, rehearsals are focusing on staging and style.”
Junior Stephanie Addison, a newcomer to OAP, is excited about being in the play. She knows it will be tough, this being her first year, but she is ready to take the challenge head-on.
“It’s challenging because I’m a pretty reserved person,” said Stephanie. “I’ve done oral reading so I have a little bit of experience, but I get nervous easily.”
The students work about 45 minutes every day during school. They will have a few rehearsals outside of school if needed, but right now, it is all they need. The students are working hard and will hopefully be ready by contest.
