Improve to 8-0, 3-0 in district
The Plains Cowboys ran their Homecoming record for the 2009 season to 4-0, with a 35-26 victory over the Forsan Buffaloes Friday night in Forsan. The win improves the Cowboys season record to 8-0, and more importantly, moves their District 7-A record to 3-0, with only two games left to play.
The game began with Forsan receiving the opening kick-off, and then being forced to punt by the Cowboy defense. After the Forsan punt was downed at the Plains nine yard-line, the Cowboy offense began a 10 play drive that was concluded on a 40-yard run by Brandon Craft. Cruz Marquez added the PAT, and with 6:07 left in the 1st quarter, Plains led 7-0. Forsan answered with a touchdown drive to tie the score at 7-7, with 1:09 left in the 1st. The Cowboys took the ensuing kick-off, and scored in just three plays, with Josh Brock scoring from 49. Marquez PAT was good, and the Cowboys led 14-7 after one quarter of play.
The 2nd quarter saw the Cowboy defense hold Forsan scoreless, while the Cowboy offense put two scores on the board. The first TD came with 5:26 left in the half, when Jaaron Bell caught a 49-yard TD pass from Brock to cap a 9 play, 72 yard drive. The PAT was good, and the Cowboys led 21-7. The second Cowboy TD of the quarter came as time expired, again on a Brock to Bell completion. The perfectly executed screen pass covered 80 yards, and the Marquez PAT sent the Cowboys to the locker room ahead 28-7.
The Cowboys took the 2nd half kick-off, and marched right down the field, with Lupe Lara scoring from 33 yards out. The drive covered 60 yards and 6 plays, Marquez' PAT was good, and with 9:42 left in the 3rd, it was Plains 35- Forsan 7. From that point on, it was all Forsan, as they scored three times in the quarter to cut the lead to 35-26.
The 4th quarter featured turnovers for both teams, but neither offense could take advantage, with the final score staying at Plains 35, Forsan 26.
Defensively, the Cowboys allowed 327 yards of offense to the Buffaloes. Jaaron Bell was the leading tackler on the night with 13, followed by Jose Gallegos and Lupe Lara with 6 tackles each.
Offensively, the Cowboys racked up 475 total yards, with 346 on the ground and 129 through the air. Josh Brock was 2-5 passing for 129 yards, 2 TD's, and an interception. Jaaron Bell had both receptions for the Cowboys. Brock also led the rushing attack, with 100 yards on 8 carries and a TD. Brandon Craft had 9-81 and a TD, and Lupe Lara had 6-52 and a TD. Cruz Marquez was 5-5 on PAT attempts.
The Cowboys will face Stanton at home on Friday night in the final home contest of the year. Plains and Stanton are two of the four teams still alive in the race for the three play-off spots in District 7-A, so this is a very pivotal game for both squads. Sr. night activities will begin at 7:00, with kick-off scheduled for 7:30. See you there!!!
