Plains Cowboys Football Keeps Rolling
Still Undefeated at 7-0
The 2009 Plains Cowboys continued their winning ways Friday night with a 26-7 victory over the visiting Tahoka Bulldogs.
The game started sluggishly for both teams, as Tahoka fumbled on their first offensive possesion. Cruz Marquez recovered the fumble, but the Cowboys were unable to move the ball, and punted the ball. Following a Tahoka punt, the Cowboys' began with the ball at their own 9 yard line. The Plains offense began to move the ball, primarily through the air, and the 7 play, 91 yard drive was capped with a 39 yard touchdown pass from Josh Brock to Court Crawford. The drive featured another completion of 34 yards from Brock to Crawford, as well. The PAT was missed and the Cowboys led 6-0. The two teams traded punts, and then turnovers, before Tahoka was forced to punt again with 1:27 left in the 2nd quarter. The Cowboys took over at the Tahoka 48, and scored in three plays, with the TD coming on a 42 yard completion from Brock to Jeffrey Barrientes with :03 left in the half. The 2-point attempt failed, and the Cowboys took a 12-0 lead into the half.
The 3rd quarter began with a Cowboy turnover, followed by a Tahoka punt. Following the punt, the Cowboys' launched a 5 play, 57 yard drive, that ended with a Josh Brock 14-yard run. Brock carried the ball in for the 2 point conversion, and the Cowboys led 20-0 with 6:01 left in the 3rd. Tahoka then mounted their only successful drive of the night, scoring with 2:42 left in the 3rd to cut the Plains lead to 20-7. The Cowboys responded with a 7 play, 65 yard drive, with Brock scoring his 2nd TD of the night, this time from 16 yards out. The PAT was unsuccessful, and the Cowboys led 26-7. The rest of the 4th quarter saw Tahoka keep the ball for almost nine minutes, but the Cowboys' defense forced a turnover on downs at the Plains 16 to end the threat, and seal the 26-7 final.
The Plains defense had one of their best nights of the year statistically, allowing only 159 yards of offense to the Bulldogs. The Cowboy offense had a very balanced night, accounting for 159 yards on the ground, and 156 yards through the air, for a total of 315. Defensively, Jaaron Bell led the way with 9 tackles, followed by Jose Gallegos and Jacob Brink with 6 apiece. Josh Brock was 7-7 through the air for 156 yards and 2 TD's, to go with 10 carries for 58 yards and 2 TD's on the ground. Court Crawford had 3 catches for 95 yards and 1 TD, and Jeffrey Barrientes had 1 catch for 42 and a TD. Jaxon Bean, Theo Cordova, and Lupe Lara accounted for the other 3 completions.
