Cowboys Remain Undefeated, Beat Sundown 31-19 - Now 6-0
Offensive & Defensive Lines Dominate
The Plains Cowboy football team remains undefeated after Saturday night's hard fought 31-19 victory over Sundown.
The Cowboys took the opening kick-off, and left no doubt in the minds of the home-standing Roughnecks that they meant business with a 10 play, 65 yard drive that ended with a 2 yard Josh Brock TD run. Edward Valdez added the PAT and the Cowboys led 7-0 with 7:20 left in the 1st quarter. Sundown took possession of the ball, and after picking up one first down, turned the ball over on downs at the Cowboy 41. Plains responded with a 17 play, 59 yard drive, capped by an Arthur Ruiz 2 yard run. Valdez added the PAT, and the Cowboys led 14-0 with 9:25 left in the 2nd quarter. Sundown answered with a touchdown drive of their own, to cut the lead to 14-7. The Cowboys then finished the half with a 44 yard drive, ending with a 29 yard FG by Valdez as the half expired, sending the teams to the locker room with the score Plains 17, Sundown 7.
The Roughnecks took the 2nd half kick-off, and manufactured a 9 play 63 yard scoring drive. The PAT was unsucessful, and the Plains lead was cut to 17-13. After Plains turned the ball over on downs, The Cowboy defense forced a Roughneck punt, and took possession at the Plains 46. On the first play of the drive, Lupe Lara took the ball and after a spectacular run, lunged across the goalline for a 54 yard TD. Jaaron Bell carried the 2-point try over the line, and the Cowboys led 25-13. Following a great kick-off from Cruz Marquez, and a punishing hit on the return by Hunter Welch, Sundown took over inside their own 10. On the first snap of the possession, Plains recoved a fumble, and took over at the Sundown five. From there, Brock scored again, this time from 11 yards out. The two-point attempt failed, and with 23 seconds left in the 3rd, it was Plains 31, Sundown 13. The fourth quarter saw Sundown score with 9:51 left to cut the score to 31-19, and the rest of the quarter failed to produce points for either team. The win moves the Cowboys to 6-0 on the season, and most importantly, to 1-0 in District 7-A. Sundown drops to 3-3, 0-1.
The Cowboy defense once again played very well, holding Sundown to 272 yards of total offense. The Cowboy offense racked up 303 yards of offense, 294 of those yards coming on the ground. Thanks to the efforts of the Cowboy offensive line, Plains had the ball for 30:19 of the 48 minute game. Jeffrey Barrientes led the rushing with 83 yards on 7 carries, followed by Lara with 8 for 68 and 1 TD. Jaaron Bell led the defense with 14 tackles, followed by Barrientes with 5. The Cowboys host The Tahoka Bulldogs this Friday in Plains at 7:30.
