Cowboys Take Sting Out Of Sudan - Now 3-0
September 13, 2009
The Plains Cowboys took the "sting" out of the Sudan Hornets 2009 Homecoming with a 24-0 victory in Sudan Friday night.
The Cowboy defense got the scoring started early in the game when Cruz Marquez took the ball away from a Sudan ballcarrier and sprinted 40 yards for a score. The PAT by Edward Valdez was good, and with 10:32 left in the 1st Quarter, the Cowboys led 7-0. The teams traded field position and possessions for the rest of the quarter. With 9:30 left in the 2nd, the Cowboys took possession at their own 44, beginning a 9-play 56-yard drive that was capped by Arthur Ruiz on a 7-yard TD run. The PAT by Valdez failed, and the Cowboys took a 13-0 lead into halftime.
After receiving the 2nd half kickoff, the Cowboys mounted a drive that consumed 8:41 of the 3rd quarter, ending with a 42-yard FG by Valdez that bounced in off the crossbar, making the score 16-0.
After stopping a Sudan drive inside the 10-yard line, the Cowboy offense took over once again. Ruiz scored from the 6, ending a 16-play, 95-yard drive that effectively ended all hopes of a Sudan comeback. Josh Brock recovered the blocked PAT and dived across for the 2-pt. conversion, ending the scoring at Plains 24, Sudan 0. The Cowboy defense put up a tremendous effort, holding Sudan to 105 yards on the night. Valdez and Jaaron Bell led the Cowboys in tackles, with 8 apiece.
Offensively, the Cowboys totaled 215 total yards on the night, all but 31 of them on the ground. Ruiz led the Cowboys with 81 yards on 20 carries, along with the two scores. The win moves the Cowboys to 3-0 on the season, as they prepare to take on the Eunice Cardinals for Homecoming Friday night in Plains. Kick-off time is 8:00. Hope to see you there!
