District Facilities Update
October 01, 2008
Nothing inspires more pride in a community than its school district – and Plains has a lot to be proud of! Excellence in academics. Excellence in athletics. Excellence in our vocational agriculture program. Excellence in industrial arts. Excellence in music. In every area, and in every year, the goal is excellence. This provides the foundation for our local students to become leaders in every facet of life. We have a rich tradition. Alumni and ex-students that have gone on to be published writers, Olympic athletes, farmers, ranchers, teachers, doctors, lawyers, engineers, architects, leaders in business – just to name a few of the areas of student distinction. Some have stayed local, others have traveled the world. The one common theme that all refer back to: “Plains ISD prepared me for life.”
This District has built a reputation on the South Plains and throughout Texas over the years as being the best and having the best. School Boards and administrations of the past prepared the way for that excellence by looking at both short and long term needs of the District. We are at that crossroad again. Do we provide the right opportunities for each of our students? Do we continue to honor the decisions of our parents and grandparents who made difficult decisions regarding this District as we now look at the future of Plains ISD? Do we have the resources to handle any changes? You cannot answer these questions until you take a long, hard look at where you are right now.
As a Board, we commissioned professionals to assess the condition of our physical buildings, and we have heard that report. We now know where we stand. We have formally asked over thirty community members to visit the facilities and listen to that same report in order to give us their thoughts on the needs of this District. At this time, those citizens are preparing their statements. We know where we are, and we know the expectation of excellence. The next thing to define is the path to get there – a master plan. Nothing else is being done at this time. No other decisions have been made. Your input as parents, community members, business owners, taxpayers, and residents is very valuable and is always welcome. If you have questions, ask us. Our desire is to see this District build on its commitment to excellence. The children of Plains deserve it, and we want to ensure that the opportunity for excellence exists – for now and in the future.
Sincerely,
Your Plains ISD Board of Trustees
